Security researchers reported this month that attackers have been breaking into the Wi-Fi at hotels and conference centers. Guests connect the way they always do, and nothing looks strange. But when someone goes to sign in to their work email, the hotel Wi-Fi sends them to a fake sign-in page instead of the real one. They type their password, and the attacker takes it.
There Was Nothing to Click
There was no email to be suspicious of. No link to check. The traveler did nothing wrong. The Wi-Fi lied to them.
That is what makes this one worth raising at your next staff meeting. Everything we normally teach people is about spotting a bad message. Here there is no message at all.
The One Rule to Remember
The Wi-Fi welcome screen that asks for your room number or last name is normal. What matters is what comes after it.
If you are on hotel, airport, or conference Wi-Fi and you are about to enter something sensitive, a work email password, a bank login, a customer record, anything that would hurt you if a stranger had it, do not do it on that network. Turn on the hotspot on your phone and use that instead.
Reading the news or checking a flight time on hotel Wi-Fi is fine. It is the moment you sign in or send something private that you want to be off their network. Nobody in the lobby can tamper with your phone's cell signal, the hotspot costs nothing extra on most plans, and turning it on takes about ten seconds.
